The last WCT20, in BD, England went in with a pace orientated attack of JD, Bres, Broad and CJ, with back up from Tredwell, and it was depressing. I can see them going the same way again. England have been dismal sticking to what they know in Asia.

its probably been the format he has been the least underwhelming in but still nothing special imo

with root and ali being part of the top order and both able to bowl I don't really see there being a lot of changes to this team regardless of where they play , I know root is being rested atm btw but will be part of the team going forward

So, who is Mo in for? Taylor's going to bat at three, we hear. Then Morgs, Stokes and Buttler.

He won't go and that's understandable. He went at 4.5 an over in BD, which is pretty remarkable, when the pace attack was going for nine.

but then we go back to the usual argument of him being a part-time bowler and not bowling at the start or end of an innings and not being expected to bowl his full complement of overs if someone does go after him

so its not really a great stat to base anything on

It's still a decent econ for someone bowling in the middle overs of a T20 (I thought he bowled a couple at the end). If there's someone else who offers a similar bowling option, fair enough. I'd be looking at lots of part time pace off options, maybe even a couple of specialist spinners. Going out there with Stokes, Willey, Finn, Wood/Woakes/Topley in the same attack, feels at least one too many fast medium options.

Moeen
Hales
Root
Morgan
Buttler
Stokes
Patel
Willey
Bopara
Rashid
Wood/Tredwell

Finn
Parry
Billings

Change the names, but that kind of balance. Arguing for Ravi feels like a kind of madness. But I've always felt: no for 50 overs, probably no for T20, but T20 in Asia or WI? Maybe.

the thing with bopara for me AC is what we get from him as a bowler should be a bonus on top of his batting and not the primary reason for picking him which is the situation he seems to have ended up in

edit : I better stop with the bopara criticism before ginger goes all BfB on me :scared

His batting strike rate was under a run a ball for most of his career. Got it above 100 in his last few games. Same with Patel. For a batsman it has got to be 120 minimum

First choice team probably contains Rashid and Moeen. They may well get Ansari in too for spinning decks. Morgan and Bayliss more likely to trust them I think than the previous management teams.

It almost feels un English to have lots of spinners in the team. Similarly, one of the Sky commentators made a very odd point on Monday questioning whether Willey and Topley, ie two left armers, could be in the same team.

I'd be surprised if many other batters were doing better for England in Asia in that time than Samit who was coming in after some terrible collapses, in T20 and 50 over. Bopara, I'm more looking for a bowler. I wouldn't pick him primarily as a batter. As I said, pick other options. But I want to get as far away as possible from a phalanx of fast medium. A lesson should be taken from the last WCT20 in BD, and other contests in Asia.
