Not sure I get your point, but mine was that I am unsure if Smith was showing dissent - maybe he was - but Hazelwood sure looked to be. As well as swearing with it.

I was actually commenting on Arthur's original (now fixed) double quote, but you got one in before I finished. I should have linked them I guess. Since I only have cricinfo I was relying on Arthur's observation of dissent.

Not sure the umpire is going to run through ball tracking if he sees a possibility that there has been contact from the bat. That doubt should be enough for it to stay onfield.

I saw your quote twice but it must have been a temporary system glitch. I have seen nothing that suggests the on field decision should have been overturned, since doubt goes with the umpire. Certainly doesn't come under the heading of howler.

At the (strong) risk of harping on about this - sure, there is the possibility that he hit it. But this is the VERY time when Thirdie should be using every means possible to be as certain as possible about what happened.

Following RTS like I wanted may well have ended with the same result - or even more certainty that he hit it - but the process should be followed until there is certainty, or the end of process has been reached.

It is hard to argue with that. I don't have video so I haven't seen the full thing. I agree the full process should be followed for consistency if nothing else.

There should also be a consistent policy for when the stump mikes are turned up or down. Always on would be my idea, a few f-bombs on TV, with associated fines, might make few people more careful about what they said. There will always be some understandable frustration though, even if it is with personal performance. "Golly I should have left that one alone" says the batsmen out on 99.
