Not for that game, no, I agree. But we are fighting for the EL. Newcastle are fighting for survival. Red cards have knock-on effects.

You're right Dier should have gone, but he was saved by his team mate getting a yellow 5 seconds later, and I think as Clattenburg was about to blow for the end of the game and Spurs were about to lose out in the title race, he applied a bit of sympathy.
