I did heat he was having second thoughts, Maradona pleaded with him to not retire, and may be it was said in the heat of the moment.

Whatever the scenario, I hate this modern way of announcing your international retirement, never used to happen. You just didn't get picked.

I guess its the massive influence of club football these days, playing for your country isn't as important as it once was.

No, Capello wa able to pick Terry, but the FA told him he had to remove Terry as captain. Capello then told the FA he wouldnt accept politicians picking his team and would quit if he didnt get his own way, the FA didnt blink, Capello walked.

Terry, probably finding an excuse, walked away from International football.
