If you watch the actual footage, Tamim at no point changes his body position to suggest he intentionally does anything. In fact, by the time contact is made, Bairstow still has hold of Tamim's hand at a position that is almost behind Bairstows back, indicating to me that if anyone is spoiling for making an issue here, its actually Bairstow. In fact, I think Tamim seems to indicate Bairstow wouldnt let go of his hand, which is actually what has occurred. And nothing excuses Stokes from being a prat and piling in pushing people.

As for Buttler, there is no excuse for that reaction.

Having just re-watched it, I reckon Johnny does keep his hand clenched, giving Tamim little option. AS for Ben, I don't think he needs much of an excuse to get into trouble.

It's difficult to pin point one player or one team for bad behavior in cricket at least nowadays. Every team has mischievous characters. England had Broad, India had Harby, Pak had Afridi / Salim Malik, Aussies have Warner, South Africa had Steyn, West Indies have Pollard. Previously only few teams were doing it regularly, however now even the players of teams who were usually quiet have realized it's better to give tit for tat. Now players of Indian team also do that as they have probably realized enough is enough and just because the past generation of cricketers accepted stupidity, they should accept it as well. Now Rohit, Virat etc gives the same treatment to what they get. New generation cricketers are of different mindset. Agression is spreading to each and every team.

Tamim's body language looked like he was fishing for something, whereas Bairstow appeared to be relatively calm and stepped away to shake other Bangladesh players hands once Stokes intervened.

You can't excuse provocation but reacting to provocation is more debatable.

Again I haven't seen what happened so I can't really comment directly on the incident.

Buttler was provoked, but his reaction still let him and his team down.

And Id like to see the ECB get Ben Stokes to close his Twitter account, because he seems to use it as a forum to make himself look like an idiot a lot

Im all for aggressive cricket, but tweeting about people being ungracious in victory when you regularly behave poorly is too far. I think a few England players have growing up to do.

And yet I've read the NZ team have played with a good spirit in India, and that India have responded in kind. A similar thing happened when England played NZ in 2015. England talked a bit about playing in a better spirit at a time the team started to seem to some, to be hard to like. But that just ended up being PR. NZ changed from the top, but England don't have that will.

I hoped that after Cook, Anderson and Broad went, things might change. But it seems this standard of behaviour is endemic to their team, and probably coached into it (though some seem to not get involved, like Moeen and Woakes). Their indulgence of James Anderson over the years has shown England/ECB are extremely pragmatic. And of course, many think it's ok for players to behave as they do.

Bayliss has excused his players again, it seems. The match ref reprimanded Buttler, and Bayliss described it as a 'slap on the wrist'. Bayliss himself is undermining the system through his response.

I understand two Bangladesh players have been reprimanded and fined, and it was the third slap on the wrist for one of them.

For me there is more of a responsibility on the host team, especially in light of the security issues surrounding this series.

Without wanting to sound like Mike, I think there is still a level of Empire thinking in the way England and its press deals with these issues. On one hand there seems to be very little accountability for our players actions on and off the field, often when we have issues like this they close ranks and fire blame to the other side or give little excuses with no action. On the other hand, we seem too familiar with dictating to other teams how they should behave, and are fully judgmental when this does occur. Someone like Afridi in England has a poor reputation, yet Jimmy Anderson gets away with murder all the time and he is a hero, just a lad playing hard and fair.

I cant think of a better example than Ben Stokes and Marlon Samuels. Samuels has been hunted down in the Aussie press, and after the World T20 way too much of England's post game press was dedicated to Samuels post match celebration, then to the fact that he had turned a deathly position into a fantastic run chase under the most pressure possible.

Stokes says Samuels disrespects the game. He says he doesnt rate him as a player. He says that Samuel lacked "manners" because he didnt take his pads off for the post match press conference and put his feet up on the table during an interview. All this made him a horrible and disgusting professional player, worthy of scorn.

Stokes for his side excuses himself and his sledges on the ground he never does anything other than to gee up his own side. He says he started the verbals with Samuels because Samuels was displaying a cocky swagger (he uses the words "acting like the Big Easy", which I am not sure are a reference to his race when thinking the Big Easy is New Orleans, a place of notable black culture in the USA), and that Samuels telling him to go f*ck off, was incredibly disrespectful, but him saying Samuels was cocky and reminding Samuels his team were going to lose was fine.

He then goes onto moan about Samuels saluting him in the test series that year when he got out. He seems to indicate that he told Samuels that "no one fu*king likes you", and acknowledges that England got really into Samuels when he was batting. But this time, Samuels again is in the wrong and Stokes is entitled to tell him where to go, even though previously the F word was uncalled for regardless of provocation?

All in all one has to laugh at a guy like Stokes singling out teams or opposition players for disrespecting the game. Hes been kicked off tours for drinking too much, for smashing up lockers, sledges all the time, pushing opposition players.

But thats alright, because he isnt a black guy with a lot of self confidence and a bit of swagger.

Don't worry Sussex you don't sound like Mike at all. He tends to defend his teams and players to the nth degree without any regard to their own actions.

No one can accuse you of that particular bias, an anti Stokes crusade maybe, but never bias!

But England players/press/some fans constantly criticise the opposition for their conduct. But are reluctant to extend it to themselves. That's bias, or hypocrisy. Ok perhaps for a fan, not so much for a journalist or official.

Notable that Bayliss calls the reprimand for Buttler 'a slap on the wrist'. And the Guardian reporter writing about the facts of the punishment, describes the penalty 'a slap on the wrist' as well, as if the ECB interpretation is the official match referee position. And amusingly for those who accuse the UK press of parroting the ECB perspective, gives us a little more evidence.
