It's one thing to continue with spin at both ends when they are a threat but a combination of pace and spin can be also effective and the three pace bowlers were significantly more economical.

Agreed. Plus the fact that in a fairly low scoring game Woakes averaged 55 at No. 8!

I'm not convinced that happened. I think that without drs, the result of the match (who knows what it would have been) would have had little credibility. But I can't see that the umpiring augmented by the third umpire, favoured either side.

While it was a poor game for the onfield umpires (Dharmasena could have been replaced by a pair of dice) drs that meant the game won't be mainly remembered for the decision making. The referral process worked well.

yeah not sure the dodgy umpiring affected the game although if bangladesh did review Ali on 5 they would have won the game.

They shouldn't drop rashid

They need to invest some time in him like they did in odi cricket

Personally I'd drop batty and pick Ansari simply so we have an office, leggie and slow left armer

Don't think batty did enough to justify having two offies in the side

If someone can get rashid to bowl slightly quicker he could be the match winner on these pitches, atm he is turning the ball too much so the batsmen miss all his good ones

Bowl a little quicker and I think he'll get more wickets, save the 47-50 mph for the tail

The game would have been a farce without DRS thanks to dharmasena

Good to see it will be used in the England india series

That's classic nonsense. It assumes that everything that happened after Ali was out would have remained the same.

It was a wrong decision that wasn't corrected by drs though. At least you can say it was within the power of BD to have the decision corrected.

Atherton made an excellent point on the verdict

India have a batting line up almost exclusively of right handers so a left arm spinner will be vital

I'd think playing Ansari in the second test would be a good idea

Playing two offies again't 6 or 7 right handers seems fairly pointless

There's the leggie playing though. Rashid is in as a front line bowler.

In defence of the England spinners, a lot of BD's runs against them in the second innings were mistimed lofted shots just eluding the grasp of desperate fielders.

The pace bowlers didn't threaten with the new ball. England should benefit by having three spinners to bowl the lion's share of the first sixty overs. And spin did take all the top order wickets. Stokes and Broad took out the lower order in both innings.

If the captain only uses his pace attack late in the innings it's self evident that they can only take wickets when they bowl.

Making_Splinters wrote:Sorry, I just don't buy the argument that we need spinners who turn the ball both ways when none of the options can be trusted to bowl a string of decent overs in a row. Subcontinental batsmen play spin better than anyone and can anyone seriously suggest that the likes of Batty, Ansari or Rashid are a better option than Anderson when he comes back? To win a test you need to take 20 wickets and we're far more likely to do that with good pace bowling than with average spin bowling.

Batty for me is going to bowl a line to keep batsman honest with the like of Ali and Rashid who can attack a bit more. Ball, Broad, Stokes, Anderson and Woakes can bowl short spells of real threat. Let''s face it, we've got three spinners in the side because none of them can be trusted.

I couldn't agree more.

if bangladesh prepare a flat deck, ban get the advantage and if they prepare a turning deck ban again get the advantage.
really Bangladesh should be favourites to win the 2nd test.

England would do well to keep it 1-0.

So despite winning this game, England don't deserve to be favourites for the second? Can't quite follow your logic there.

Bangladesh have one batsman averaging over 40. England have four. Not sure how you can say that Bairstow and Moeen won't score runs consistently, considering that Moeen averages 55 (2 hundreds, 4 fifties) and Johnny averages 72 (3 hundreds, 5 fifties) in the 2016 calendar year. And how many games are there going to be when Cook and Root don't score, and England's second and third wickets score less than ten runs?

England also have better pacers who've proved they can both keep it tight and be a wicket taking threat with the old ball. Bangladesh's pace attack was anonymous.

Sure Bangladesh have a better spin attack, and England may still be expected to struggle on a turning track. It won't be a shocker if Bangladesh win, they're certainly capable of it based on this match. But on the evidence of past performances and this test match, England will be favourites.

A few less boundary riders and a few more fielders stopping the single would help as well

Try to stop the batsmen rotating so easily

Long hops and fullies usually go for four even with 4 men on the ropes
