Arguable, but the ODI is functioning and have clearly changed their culture under him. But yes, he picked Billings and dropped him. He picked Dawson and Ball, but both came with Flower's endorsements and seemed a bit forced on him. He picked Duckett too.

the difference between ODIs and test is we have 11 or 12 players trying to get into 7 or 8 spots in the ODI team and almost any combination would work, with clearly defined roles

for the test side we have 2 or 3 gaps we seem to have no idea how to fill and have lost the plot about what shape the team should take

no cricketers on the SPOTY shortlist

not surprising given their showing on this tour and the last

they must be bad, because 2 footballers made the shortlist and everyone knows that footballers are the biggest waste of sporting space in Britain

I wonder if it was time for James Whitaker to go some while past. He's been in his role for too long.

I've stated my view on Cook and Flower often enough.

I don't think Sussex' view of player performances is balanced. A number of players have given signs of realising their potential under Bayliss. Woakes, Stokes, Bairstow, and, perhaps Rashid may become another. Anderson has been rejuvenated, and Cook has been repaired and kept on the road (though plainly in decline). Broadly, skill management has been ok. Results have remained buoyant in spite of poor selection.

Where England have really floundered is in identifying talent. The spinner/all rounder predeterminism, the continued opener whirlwind, the flawed identification of middle order talent. Too many players are being found out. The A team worked in a period when England were doing well, as a means of finely filtering the best players. The spinners in India should have been pre-tested in A team cricket. England, as in the nineties, are finding out about their players when it is too late.

Maybe the biggest criticism of Bayliss would be the reaction to his statement that the top order had to be more aggressive, which stimulated an unhelpful response from Taylor and Compton in particular.

you make a good point there AC

when a team is doing well in favourable conditions you can get away with carrying 2 or 3 players, and too often imo we have allowed that to happen

when you are up against it in conditions that dont suit you then you need all eleven to be contributing to have any chance of success

the bizarre thing is its hard to argue with 6 england players being in the team of the series so far but we are 2-0 down and been thumped in both games we lost :hmmm

The best three players are all arguably Indian though.

Rashid out Jadeja in. Jadeja has been a star with bat, ball and in the field.

tough school hope when the top wicket taker in the series so far doesn't get into your XI

TBH india only got 3-5 players contributing although most of them are doing 2 jobs in the team.
Kohli, pujara with the bat, Ashwin, Jadeja and jayant with the ball and bat.
TBH the difference at the moment is the all rounders + Kohli.
india are basically playing with 9 batsman and 5 front line bowlers.

Cant argue with Bairstow. Rashid is a question mark still, how he performs away from pitches that help will define him in the future, as will the end of the series. Stokes was a played given infinite time to improve so I dont think this is indicative of a normal situation. Woakes was a heavily ignored and abused player who simply has lots of talent, I dont think the coach can be credited for "finding him".....

As for Cook. Scored 3 hundreds in Bayliss era of about 25 tests..... scored two in May 2015 before Bayliss took over. Not sure this shows much of a "repair" job personally. If he was broken in May 2015, then lets break some more players. Same with Anderson. Averaged 22 in 2014, averaged 18 in his first series of 2015.

With Anderson, it seems more that the player himself has been vocal about prolonging his career with bigger rest periods. He has missed parts of all series under Bayliss. Id hazard a guess maybe a lot more players would perform better given this luxury.

Also not sure the results are acceptable.
Series win to Sri lanka counts but no one really cares about it since sri lanka would hardly test england in england this time.
pakistan 2-2 isn't good enough and I don't care how Bayliss or fans here spin that Pakistan should never win 2 test in a series in England.
1-1 Bangladesh drawing to a "poor side" isn't good enough and actually being outplayed and lucky to win one test.
even in 2015 the Ashes series was an success but were unable to win on a normal wicket.
if anything that the biggest worry England not being able to win in lords or Oval.

England far too inconsistent and we literally been seeing the same problems for the downfalls since 2015 and not much been done about it.

The only series england played well from test 1 to the last test been SA away series and even then England lost the plot in the dead rubber.
