i've been critical of Moeen and still think #4 is too high for him but thats been an important 50 today, even if he was a little lucky at the start

need someone to do a kohli and turn these starts into a real biggie tho

Moeen seems to bat fine if he has not had to bowl a huge amount of overs.

England have to accept that if they are going to bat Moeen in the top 5, they will have to reduce the amount of bowling he does.

root not happy

a faint spike on snicko and i'll probably get flamed for this again but i dont think you can overturn on that alone

i know there is no hotspot here but i always think that when you have the full technology, so slo-mo, snicko and hotspot, that at least 2 of the three need to suggest the onfield decision was wrong before you overturn

root was convinced he didn't hit that and kohli didn't look convinced when he asked for the review either

edit : just to add, patel didn't even really appeal for it and he was the closest to it

its easy saying that in theory but the only reason he got into the test team in the first place was because of his bowling

root almost turning into shane watson with his record of getting past 50 and not going on to a hundred

this is his 58th innings in the last 2 years i think and he has got to 50 on 27 occasions in those 58 innings, which is insanely consistent, but only gone on to a 100 6 times

Indeed he was, but when you then pick him to bat at 4, you are picking him as a batsman.

I'm not sure how the third umpire can change that decision. With out hotspot i don't think we will ever know the right answer.

but you cant ignore his value as a bowler

you are gimping your chances of winning the game if you choose not to bowl the guy who has been your first choice spinner and bowl a garth batty or liam dawson instead to try and rest him for when he has to bat

i agree in principle with what you are saying about it maybe not being reasonable for him to bat at #4 after bowling that many overs but he has struggled to show much consistency with the bat over the 30 odd tests he has played and hasn't had to bowl 50 overs in an innings in many, if any, of those previous games

its one of my real bugbears about DRS

some 3rd umpires use the technology to make a decision on whether they would give it out or not

some follow the guidelines about needing conclusive evidence to overturn whatever decision the onfield umpire made

the marginal nature of that snicko to me is in line with an umpires call hawkeye for an lbw and in those instances the onfield decision stands

good session for england

would have been happier if root was still in but in a decent position considering we were 21-2

I had to pop out to the health clinic so missed the Root dismissal, sad that he didn't go on to a hundred once again he's really missed out too often in this series. I said a while ago that whenever Moeen's place in the team is questioned he comes up with a good innings to kill the talk, looks like he's doing it again.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

that review looked more out than the root one but it doesn't get overturned due to umpires call
