philander is a decent batsman.
I remember before ashwin/Ali/Woakes. boycott and few other were calling him the best number 8 in the last SA tour to england.
philander also tends to score runs when SA need them.
might have a low average but scores runs when SA need them.

In this test it has no effect as there is too much time left and a result is virtually guaranteed.
