I am a mild mannered chap ; even when I was young and fast I was not given to swearing at batsmen ; but I still find it hard not to emit a curse if I drop one short and see it go for four...all my sympathy with the bowlers here.

Stamping out "nasty" sledging ? Fine . But this is punishing victimless crime - pure nanny-state overkill.

As to the match it is quite fascinating...England have done better than I expected - or feared , anyway - in getting level for just three wickets. If they can get through the first hour in the morning and not get destroyed by the new ball around lunch then they might well set the tourists a tough target. Still could easily fall away though so I have West Indies marginal favourites at the moment.

Pleased to see Stoneman get some runs. Would have been nice to see him go on ; but this is a start and assures him of the next match at least...there is much to like in him , certainly in the context of recent England top order try outs. Less so Westley who apparently isn't handling well targeted attacks on his obvious technical weakness. Back to the drawing board for him I think...

Whatever happens a much more compelling contest than the mismatch last week.

The 'no ball' looked just about the right decision to me. After seeing a still, I was expecting a howler but with the tv film it looked ok, and I agree with the benefit of the doubt going to the bowler as movement can be lost between the frames, so it's possible a small fraction of the slide might be lost. I think that's right!

West Indies bowled magnificently I thought (from the highlights) especially Holder who produced a classic Headingley spell of medium fast seam and looked very dexterous in the action he was putting on the ball. But they were let down by 25% luck and 75% bad fielding.

Not sure if mentioned back in any previous posts, but earlier in the day they showed the line (not sure if same end) without a batsman at it and the line was really wonky! Even in the no-ball incident, you can see the close part of the line doesn't line up with the far part. The wonkiness was in the bowler's favour, so increased the likeliness that a few mm were behind the line.
