The ball itself was not to bad, but had the pitch made him think it would do more. Obviously you must play each ball on its merits, but had he got it into his head that the pitch would play up more?

yeah that probably the best summary so far.
holding said CSA would want the game to carry on as well, so a lot of politics will be involved now, if the game is abandoned he said Johannesburg can't host the Australian test match.

Agreed.

IMHO modern day batsmen don't play the short ball as well as they did in the 1980s. Back then there were no helmets and I believe batsmen did a better job of handling the short ball. With all these batting roads around modern batsmen seem deficient in these defensive skills.

The old pitches of Perth Bridgetown and Kingston are not what they used to be. So when these batsmen come across a pitch like this they don't seem to know what to do.

If Indians can bat certainly SA who are born and bought up on pacey and bouncy wickets can bat. Will be interesting to see how Saffers react to all this. There is reputation at stake now that Indians have batted taking blows on very same wicket.

SA have not asked for the game to be stopped, and at no stage have asked for that. It seems the umpires and the match referees have done all this.

As per the rule both captains will be consulted. Virat will certainly not agree to stop this.

I am very considerate in terms of health concerns. Never rejected any sick leave in my career. In fact once I asked one of the employee to get doctors certificate whether he is fit to resume work. Whereas others used to take proof of doctors certificate in case those who report to them took leaves. On that rational and thinking pattern personally I believe if cricketers feel they want to avoid batting due to health concerns I won't get upset even though we miss a victory.

Anyone remember that west indies tour of Australia in 1976?

Lillian Thompson wreaked havoc throughout the series with some brutal bowling that nowadays would be considered dangerous.

Bernard julian fractured thumb.
Alvin Kallicharan broken nose
Clive Lloyd struck on the jaw
Michael holding struck in the face like Elgar but without a helmet
Viv Richards struck in the box

No matches cancelled then.

Different times. ...

One disadvantage for India is that at least 6 overs have been lost. What could be 2 or 3 down given the wicket and Elgar was shaken due to blows, now stands as just 1 down. One may say SA could have scored 20 runs, but that is not more probable given how events unfolded

There is a T20 at this ground as well as test versus Australia. If this match is stopped then it will be huge loss for the local association.

wouldn't call those overs crucial considering india will win this by a massive margin, Sa won't even get within 100 runs of the target.
plus india still got 2 days for the 9 wickets.
baffled how suddenly the game can continue tomorrow.
umpires have a had poor game here.

2 days left so enough time to bowl them out. Still the last half hour is always crucial and SA could avoid that time today.

interesting tweet from pat Symcox.
he said if he was the indian captain, he would call the BCCI and tell them to call CSA and say you make the players play tomorrow or we going home and won't play the odi and t20 series.

how dangerous is this pitch?

I recall that WI pitch where the test match was called off after a handful of overs. If that was a 10, what is this?
