Hope hasn't made a ton in twenty Tests, since he made one in each innings at Headingley. In that time, he averages 24.8.

Those are his only two Test hundreds. Before that Test he averaged 18.6.

Worst Test averages for top six bats to play minimum of thirty Tests.

Worst is Javed Omar for BD at 22.07. Worst for England is Mike Brearley (second overall) with 22.1. Worst for WI is Devon Smith (fifth overall) at 23.8.

Hope is twentieth overall, behind Stuart Williams, Daren Ganga and Kieran Powell for WI.

He's only the fourth worst currently playing though. Bottom place goes to Lahiru Thirimanne (22.3, third ever) then Imrul Kayes (24, eighth ever) and Mitch Marsh (25, tenth ever).

Marsh is the second worst Aussie ever, behind George Giffen who played in the nineteenth century.

crapinfo asking if the rain has ruined England's chances of winning the series

no, crapinfo, they did that all by themselves in Southampton by losing wickets in clusters for not many runs and then dropping chance after chance

Those are some telling stats, Arthur....

Hopefully (pun intended) Shai will begin the process of pulling himself out of such company today.

BTW, I'm impressed with Mike Atherton's knowledge of Caribbean cricket, past and present.

I wonder if having a Guyanese wife has something to do with it.

Didn't know he was married to a Guyanan. Apparently his wife's grandfather was a windies player

Francis de Caires. Played in the first ever test held on Windies soil, scoring 80 and 70, yet would only play 3 total tests all in 1930.

Fine session for West Indies. Their team discipline has been impressive.

(OK Joseph tested his luck , but he was a night watchman) the proper bats have knuckled down again - and largely looked untroubled , although Brathwaite has been a little uneasy at times facing Bess.

Wouldn't say England bowled poorly ; but nothing really inspirational. Maybe it is the lack of a crowd ; but I have had a sense they've been a little flat in the field for much of this series. Will need a lift in the next couple of hours or they can kiss goodbye to the trophy for another series...

Maybe time for a burst of Stokes ?

Fifty partnership up. I think Brathwaite's more recent form has been poor too, so an unlikely alliance.
