Regarding England number eights. To have batted ten innings, Craig White averaged 50, Matt Prior 36, though they were probably sevens who had a nightwatcher on occasions. Same with Russell. Highest of others, there's Walter Robins, who I don't know, then Curran.

So the worst just at 8 is Alex Tudor's 7. Of anyone to play there a lot, it's Chris Old's 14. Overall Archer averages 8.2 which makes him not the obvious candidate for the job. Still, he'll probably never bat there again after this game.

Learn to pick the spin, maybe? Make a commitment to play late and read from the pitch ?
