not as many as Di Canio, but then Kavanagh didn't end up on his backside. Di Canio got an 11 match ban, but it seemed longer than that at the time. I suppose if Mitrovic got 11 matches he'd miss the rest of the season and it would feel longer

West Ham were terrible. Made some real howling mistakes. Newcastle like to play the high press and play at a high tempo, but they had loads of time on the ball because West Ham didn't seem to want to press them at all. Fabianski made an excellent save to deny Murphy what might have been a contender for goal of the season, before then fluffing his lines, rushing out and giving the ball straight to Isak who said thank you very much and chipped the ball over his head into the net. Newcastle's third came straight after the break as the defender faffed about with the ball in the box, let Murphy take it off his toes and roll it across the box for a Wilson tap in.

Brentford on Saturday will provide a sterner test than WHam.... imagine saying that a few years ago

It looks like the top 4 race is now between Newcastle, Spurs and United. Brighton in theory are in the race with their games in hand, but their position is better than it appears, as they have played a lot of the easier games recently, and in the coming weeks they have a lot of tough games. Do well not to drop to 7-8th. Liverpool are probably out of it now. If they lose at Arsenal at the weekend, its all but dead. Brentford are too far back and played extra 1-2 games. Villa's late season surge under Emery is a little too late. If they had sacked that useless giant turd manager a few weeks before, maybe they'd be in that chasing pack a bit more.

Newcastle have Tottenham at home I think the match following the Easter weekend? Win that, and Newcastle had 1.5 feet inside the top 4. Tottenham have slightly tougher fixtures.

Talking of giant turd managers...... Fat Frank has been re-hired by Chelsea apparently.

At what stage does it become beyond doubt that the new owner has bought Chelsea just to sink them? Imagine spending 600 million, wrecking the future of the club with 9 year contracts... then giving the keys to the fort to a guy who not only done nothing in his career, but did nothing for your team not that long ago?

He was in 9th odd place when he got sacked.. and then Tuchel won the CL with the same team.

just to the end of the season, I think. Chelsea can't compete, but won't drop out, so not much risk. Then they'll hope to get a proper manager in place by the end of the season

now I think about it, didn't Conte say that he was going to take the rest of the season off, so perhaps Chelsea think they'll be able to sign him ahead of the new season

They say you make your own luck.... well Newcastle are certainly making theirs

They could have been 3 down at half time against Brentford..... a goal was chalked off for offside, then Toney had a penalty saved before making amends with another pen on the stroke of half time

second half... Howe made two subs and a bit of a change of shape and Newcastle quickly put 2 in the back of the net, before having a 3rd chalked off themselves

net result.... back to 3rd in the table, with 5 wins on the spin

next stop away to Villa, who have also won 5 on the spin and now find themselves in 6th with the prospect of european football next season. Funny what happens when a team employs a manager who knows what he's doing

I'd definitely take a point at Villa Park ahead of a home tie against Spurs the following week. That Spurs match will go a long way to deciding who gets Champs Lge football next season

I've been hearing about Callum Wilson's disallowed goal for handball. I haven't seen it yet, but it was mentioned on the BBC live reporting feed at the time that VAR were able to find one frame that showed that the ball looked close to his elbow.
