I suppose the reason Smith is there is to get a load of rusty ducks and batting failures out of the way before the ashes. Sussex are taking a punt that he might make a big score somewhere along the way. I'm not convinced Smith helps the Sussex cause tbh. They already seemed to have a very handy batting unit in that middle order.

I thought Worcs would be sensible to prepare a bowler friendly pitch with Smith and Pujara linking up.... 50/5 tells me that maybe they have.
