A rather hollow victory - like South Africa at the last world cup, England save their best for last, and leave us all wondering why they couldn't perform like that earlier in the tournament.

Where does this rank on the list of England's many world cup debacles? I think it's the worst of all. 2015 was bad, but we hadn't been very good at ODIs for a long time then, so it wasn't exactly a shock. 1999 was also pretty rubbish. But as defending world champions and a team full of some of England's all-time white ball greats, to fold quite so meekly I think makes it the most abject.

I mean, we got hammered by Sri Lanka, who have otherwise been absolute rubbish in this tournament.

Freddie's pedalo WC under MPV in 2007 sticks out as a farce. But looking up the results, they only lost to the big sides. And unlike Pakistan and India, they qualified for the second stage.

Must be a case for this one being the worse. Other times have felt bad because England didn't qualify from the group, but this time they didn't even challenge.

So India become the first team to go undefeated in the 'round-robin' style world cup group stage.

Australia won undefeated in 2003 and 2007, which was the days of pool stage followed by super-six/super eight. And West Indies were undefeated in 1975 and 1979 (one washout in the latter), which is when there were two groups of 4, 3 group stage games each, then straight to the semis. A whole world cup in a lean 15 matches. How times change.

Shame really. I wanted England to finish 9th and arrange an "impromptu" test tour to the Caribbean.

Marginalising the West Indies is not good for the global game.
