it was a very fine run chase nonetheless. Confidence will be high ahead of test 2

Amazing stuff. Hats off to Ben Duckett. He's become one of the best openers around.

With 400-3 in the first innings and Bumrah firing, India should have grabbed this one, but never got away from England.

There are some pretty crazy stats out there for this game. One of the highest run aggregates in a result (3 of the top 5 have involved England in the last 3 years), second most runs ever chased on the final day to win a test (second only to Headingley 1948 which featured 170* from a certain D Bradman). First time ever a team has lost after scoring 5 centuries. Highest 1st innings score at 3 down to go on and lose.

India have now had one win in their last 9 tests.

Horrible innings from Stokes, though his runs were useful. Contrasted with Smith who hit relatively cleanly. Maybe like the older Flintoff, there's a case for swapping the allrounder with the keeper in the order- Prior in AF's case.

Though given how vulnerable to injury BS's bowling is, I expect he'll want to stay in the top six.
