I'm talking about Lillee and Thomson, the 80s WI pace quartet, Alan Donald, Shoaib Akhtar. Mitch Johnson shattered a pretty decent England XI to the degree that they didn't want to go out and face him. Not sure there is that sort of 98mph pace in the game anymore. My impression is everyone recognises that isn't sustainable. 88-90mph isn't scary pace, though it might be useful allied with other skills

Its impossible to have these discussions, because different standards exist for different eras. You end up with the classic "trust me bruv, I was there" argument put against fact. All those 70s-80s top quickest were measured scientifically in comparable technological setups to now - none of them bowled a quicker ball than Archer's 93.8 mph ball in the last 24 hours, and all but Thomson managed a speed that has not been exceeded by every single bowler in this series bar Chris Woakes. Other studies are quoted all the time in various histories, all are absent in their method and evidence, or can be totally disregarded for their inaccuracies - the response has always been Typhoon Tyson claiming they made him wear 4 jumpers, or both Thomson and Lillee claiming he was ill everytime a speed gun was put near him. I guess we have to laugh when people claim Thomson could hit the sightscreen on the full after it bounced - not even Brett Lee bowling at full pace got near that, so its entirely urban myth.

I'd hazard a bet that pace is at its highest its ever been. Tait registered 160kmh post Lee/Akhtar. Wood managed nearly 99mph last summer. Lockie Ferguson went 97 a few months ago. Nortje has registered over 95-96 so many times its no longer noteworthy.

The Lee's and Akthar's didn't always bowl 100mph every game either. These are generationally fast balls they managed once in a career. They both generally bowled in the high 80s/lower 90s over tests.

Again though, its not really comparable. Michael Holding played 60 tests in nearly 13 years... Joe Root has mid-way through his 156th test in a similar span, and thats before we 100s more LO games Joe played. I am sure if teams played 4-5 games of test cricket a year, didn't play IPL/T20s and reduced the amount of ODIs by half, you'd see a lot more tearaway quicks lasting their career without breaking.

We thrashed this out about a year ago, and I'm sure we both agree that I had the more convincing case ;)

Presume he's injured as he didn't finish an over.

New ball anyway. Let's see Archer get stuck in.

Id guess its the same as Steve Smith at Lords in the WTC. Jadeja lasered one back to him at warp speed, couldnt get his hands open quick enough to take it, and the ball whacked his finger. I guess it might be dislocated or at least very sore, he instantly looked worried. Apparently not his bowling hand, so I guess after he gets some treatment for the pain he will be back on the field.

Could just be faking it to deter attention from the dropped catch.

Quite a lot of missed chances this session. Reddy has nearly run himself out three times, Pope with two poor throws, the Duckett was harder but the direct hit each time had him out.

Meanwhile, Archer gets one to absolutely boom off the wicket with the new ball. Not that short at all, but Kumar Reddy would have smelt the leather on the ball as that passed his nose.

I'd like to see England's bowlers get wide on the crease and angle that ball into NKR's pads. He brings the bat down from out to in a lot, leaving a big gap between bat and bat.Get a bit of nip, swing or inconsistent bounce, he's going to miss the ball

Nitish cops one straight into the helmet, was a hard blow that. On his feet and thumbs up, all ok.... nothing he could do about that though, the ball just did not get up and he ducked slightly into it. Good to see hes ok... mandatory concussion test now, more time being lost.

Didn't mention that on BBC live updates.

Slow session. England at least not losing quickly.

Watching this test makes me feel like I have been teleported back 20 years ago. England are bowling tight lines, India are showing grit and patience, happy to block and put away the bad ball or nudge singles around. England also batted throwback style. I agree with Stuart Broad (again!! twice in 24 hours!!), all the lost overs and slow development of play is now making the draw more likely. The pace in the pitch makes hitting quickly hard, the lack of movement in it makes taking wickets hard....

Unless spin becomes a factor, I cant see another 25 wickets falling in 7 sessions.

Stokes gets another bouncer to bounce awkwardly, Reddy can only fend it behind. Breakthrough finally made...lead 61.

England need one more wicket to get in the tail

Some uneven bounce, so if England get parity they might be in a good place. But they're having to dig these batters out. A couple of wickets together would be refreshing.
