amid all the excitement, I'd missed county cricket's first ever injury substitution.... Tom Westley, retired hurt, replaced by Noah Thain

I had wondered if subs had to be like to like, but Essex have replaced a top order batter with an allrounder, so I guess not

That means Westley will not be able to feature against Yorks next week

edit: it does have to be a like for like replacement, according to crapinfo, so Thain will not be allowed to bowl in this game

I wonder if Essex are regretting this now, given the way the match played out?

They could just as easily have had Thain as a fielding sub and made a decision on an injury sub later in the game. Just a bit too quick off the mark if you ask me. Of course he might be completely unable to play next week anyway, in which case the point is moot, but teams might be advised to bear it in mind

Lead is 266, which looking at this morning's session could be very handy, but after last year's performances, it's quite hard to have any faith in us taking 10 wickets

I imagine we started the morning hoping to declare in time to have a few overs at Kent before lunch. If we end up being able to declare before lunch, then I'll be a bit worried, tbh, especially after the heavy roller has been out

A very worrying draw. We lost a shed load of wickets in a quick fire heap and then looked largely toothless with the ball for long periods. This is what last year looked like, so crapinfo may have us as favourites for the div 2 title, but right now I'm pleased there isn't a 3rd division to get relegated into
