Thanks for the reply (and Sussex).

Don't know about that ! Think it would be rare for someone to call another a bogan to his face (except maybe a friend as a joke) without it being intended - and taken - as an insult. Used more as a mildly disparaging term for , as GJ said , those considered "uncultured". Or socially inferior perhaps ? Not exactly vicious but still a bit of a put down.

But I suspect its exact meaning probably varies a little with the opinions of those who use the term.

Thanks Alfie. You say 'his', so now I'm wondering if the word is not used for women...

Good question, Arthur.

There is absolutely no doubt that there are PLENTY of "bogan chicks". No doubt.

Still, it is more a masculine term than not.

There's a thesis in there, somewhere.

Not the film I'm thinking about which led me to this- so I don't give away any of my top 365!- but say, Muriel in Muriel's Wedding is a bogan, even though a woman.

Sh!t yeah!

Muriel is a great example of a regular bogan. Not extreme though.

It's been a favourite saying in our family since the movie came out: "You're terrible, Muriel".

Or Kenny. Maybe bogan-comedy is an Aussie genre?

If Muriel counts as Bogan, then maybe the term doesn't have much similarities to chav in England. Its been a while I seen the film, but by memory Muriel is just a bit of an uneducated, unrefined idiot - a working class Bridget Jones type, who at heart is a good person if a little naive.

Chav in England is much more of a negative term, it conjures up images of violence or crime, a subset of disagreeable working class people who make other normal people's lives misery. A chav is the type that smashes your windows, tries to bottle you in a nightclub for looking at them funny, or drives around the estate in a 20 year old Ford Mondeo with bespoke 300 watt bass sub-woof, an exhaust that makes explosive sounds, and its own purple mood lighting built in the undertray, all while power sliding around corners...

Daily Mail readers fantasise about the day they are able to start the Chav Holocaust.

Yes, that sounds like a fair analysis. Maybe more of a good natured idiot. Though Muriel is a bit nasty before everything gets into line for a feel-good ending.

Not sure if bogan-comedy is something Australia does a lot, or just something we like to import from them.

I suppose the Adventures of Barry McKenzie/Barry McKenzie Holds His Own are the common ancestor of this sort of thing.

I think British Working Class people like stories about normal, relatable people, and TV up until around 20 years ago was full of these type of comedies, so I guess there is crossover appeal given the culture/language similarities. Somewhere around that 20 years ago period, we then started to get a string of BBC 8pm on a Tuesday type comedies that were grounded completely in middle class sensibilities, usually involving 2 parents and 2 kids, one of which was always supposed to be a bit odd.

Working class representation ended up becoming Harry Brown "the street is dangerous" type stuff. You really don't see anything like the Royale Family anymore.

Even comedy that is for the uneducated masses is distinctly upper-middle class nowadays. Jack Whitehall doing "fish out of water" travelogues with his millionaire dad. The unfathomably posh Michael McIntyre doing whatever unfunny thing he is doing. And the like...
