I said way back at the end of last season that a big part of me hoped that Newcastle didn't get into the top 5 and qualify for the UCL, and I said that because English teams should be winning the two lesser European trophies every year.

Villa fans were gutted that they just missed out on 5th spot, but they're dancing in the streets now

Newcastle fans were chuffed to bits a year ago, but have had their heads in their hands ever since

Doesn't matter what the UEFA format is, a European trophy is a European trophy and a very fine thing to have in the cupboard. Doesn't hurt when trying to persuade top transfer targets to come to your club, either

I had this argument with a friend last night. Football at the end of the day is about winning things, so I'd rather be Villa than anyone but Arsenal this year. You get no trophy for finishing 2nd-5th....
