Job done for England. I didn't watch the game (middle of the night here in Oz), but honestly, given the reaction you'd think England had lost. I think the English press are only ever satisfied if we thump sides 4-0 or more and the opposition never even saw the England penalty area (and if we do, England get no credit as the side we were playing was obviously sh1te if we thumped them).

Few knockout games are free flowing attacking affairs. So far we've had 2 penalty shootouts, 3 extra times and 7 games with a 1 goal margin in 9 knockout matches. England dominated possession and attacking threat, had several chances on goal needing some fine saves to keep them out. England pressured, subs made an impact and the goals came could be the narrative. But instead it's doom and gloom. I don't know what people were expecting. DRC proved they were no pushovers in the group phase - drew with Portugal and Columbia only best them by one goal too.

Isn't that why football is interesting? Because it's unpredictable? England could easily go out to Mexico next round. But none of the teams left in their half of the draw are unbeatable - Brazil just squeaked past Japan, England are still paper favourites to beat Mexico...

I don't usually like watching Spain play football.... soporific ain't in it, but I enjoyed this game tonight. They were pretty direct whilst still keeping the ball. Pressed hard and attacked relentlessly... what's not to like?

Thought England left it a bit late to get back level - but Belgium : wow. How on earth did Senegal let that slip ? Might have been a bit stiff with the final killer goal but really if you can't defend better than that you get what you earned.

As for the England game : I am less critical than some never satisfied pundits. Yeah wasn't great that they took so long to score , and defensive problems remain. But although I confess to some anxiety as the clock ticked over the hour mark , my "objective" view of the match reckoned a goal was just about inevitable from all that attacking. And once they equalised , not at all surprised the winner soon followed. Just glad it didn't take to extra time as they could do with all the rest they can get before playing Mexico up on a mountain. Hats off to Harry Kane anyway , though would be nice to see a couple of others getting on the scoresheet.

Mexico has to be a big threat - altitude and all. Need a slightly different game plan I guess but I do think Tuchel knows what he's doing so hopefully (and hoping some key players are fit !) this could be time for another step up . Need to keep stepping up throughout if you want to win anything , eh ?
