Signal of intent to what? To intend to buy average players for World Record fees because they are desperate? Far from showing power, this makes Man United look stupid. In fact, they would do better to cover the money in petrol and burn it, at least then Real Madrid wouldn't be laughing because they just bought the two best players at the World Cup and made a profit of 10-15 million by off loading a bench warmer for 80 million over his value.

You've got Lingard and Blackett, two championship players starting, Ashley Young who's been shite for at least two years playing in his natural position, playing at wing back, Smalling and Jones who just aren't good enough at the moment as your first two centre backs but what you really need is an attacking player when you've already got Wayne, RVP, Mata, Kagawa, Herrera...
