KP mentions that he had his own style and it worked for him. He would just not follow what the coach because coach thinks it is wrong, unless and until the coach tells what is wrong and KP would ask questions about coach logic/reasoning behind asking to bat in a particular way.
Personally i agree with KP that everyone batsman will have his own batting style. Also, as KP enjoyed much better success as English batsman in ODI's and test matches, there was no reason that he should have changed his batting. I disliked Sehwag's and KP's approach in odd game especially during follow on or situation when the team should only look for a draw. However, i would say that if both of them are averaging 49 and 47 runs then they need not please each and every fan about their patience, shot selection, footwork, approach etc. From teams point of view the runs are important and both did a wonderful job for their country. Why would someone want to fix their batting at age of 28+ ? Asking a batsman to change the way he holds bat even after age of 16 will have severe negative effect on his game. Approach wise in some games yes, both could show some improvement. But there is also no harm in letting just one batsman out of 6 specialist batters play his natural game or more suited style in all situations. Did not the think tank give Broad the role of enforcer because he was the one who was more suited to bowl short aggressive stuff even though it did not work out more often than not. The only time they asked him to bowl less short stuff was when that tactic had flopped. In case of KP at least he got a lot of success if not lesser with his own style. Why they never wanted an enforcer in batting. Is it because they feel that only pace bowlers can attack. Is that why we see England not trying to pick spinners to win tests and not trying to pick batsman to win test by using them as attacking mode. No specialist spinner means that the team thinks a spinner cannot attack and win matches. This mentality that only pace bowlers can attack are probably not helping England much in the ODI format. At least they can afford one full flowing attacking batsman in ODI and test formats. Until they change the mindset of who can attack and who cannot England spinners and attacking batsman will probably find it tough to even get picked, lest perform given the freedom. KP just did that but in spite of performing what he gets. Dropped !
