Downton needs removing. He has shown little if any ability in any facet of his supposed role at the ECB. Combined with the almost Mugabe esque desire from Clarke to hang on to power, there needs to be a blood letting at the ECB.

It's said that the "sacking", or more accurately the termination of his central contract, was down to KP as he didn't want any blocks to playing in the IPL. As his employer, the ECB could in theory have blocked him from playing. Though on the flip side, he probably could have gone to India anyway - what would the ECB have done? He was already dropped, and any financial sanctions wouldn't have come close to his IPL salary.

I think everyone here knows the method of getting rid of Pietersen was wrong. He should have gone to the World T20 - by all accounts he had a decent relationship with Giles and Broad - and then when the new coach was picked, it should have then been decided. Downton's opinion should have been irrelevant. Flower's thoughts should certainly have been taken into consideration, but ultimately it should have been down to the new coach and captain, whilst also working with the selectors to choose a replacement.

The sacking and the termination of the contract are two different things. It was only being permanently removed from England duties that made the termination of KP's contract advantageous to him.

Schofield review or not IMHO it was the Board's duty to examine all facets of the tour. In fact they should carry out a review of the systems on a regular basis - then they might see that the 'overblown' management system doesn't work. Presumably they thought it sufficient to appoint a new MD and rely on him to sort it out. Whilst the CEO/MD may well have delegated powers to act, the Board is ultimately responsible and should be asking searching questions of its management on a regular basis.

Pietersen came off quite well in this. About the only time he was (imo) less than forthright was when Ponting asked him about what happened between him and Strauss.

ECB should bring him back, hope he has a poor run with the bat, then drop him on merit so they can say "See, we were right".
