if bangladesh prepare a flat deck, ban get the advantage and if they prepare a turning deck ban again get the advantage.
really Bangladesh should be favourites to win the 2nd test.

England would do well to keep it 1-0.

We've just won without Cook and Root contributing, which won't happen very often. I'd say England deserve to be favourites.

TBH I be surprise if Bairstow or Ali score runs again consistently and Stokes probably won't match his total again.
plus I doubt Bangladesh batting will fail again ether and they got better spinners.
Should be noted Bangladesh batting collapsed twice from good positions.

TBH wouldn't be confident of an england win until england actually scores the runs first.
Too many question marks in the batting and bowling to be so sure.
Actually quite happy england won in the end, would be so pissed if Bangladesh won the test and I missed out on placing a bet on them, since I was pretty sure bangladesh will do well in this series and probably win a game.
worth a punt with them at 6 or 7s to win a game.

Really if you look at it objectively it is no brainier that Bangladesh start favourites.
England got what 2 batsman anyone got trust in scoring runs, been scrapping runs for the best part of 2-3 yrs.
No spinners that can keep control and only one that looks threatening.
the only advantage they got is the pace men reverse swing.

For bangladesh they got 3 better spinners, decent batting line up in the conditions.
the only cons they have is poor pace bowlers and a big tail which is vulnerable to the reverse swing.

Really the crucial point is that I reckon Bangladesh is more likely to take 20 wickets cheaply enough than England will take 20 wickets.
not really sure where England are taking the wickets from or even keeping things tight considering most times the spinners will have to bowl yet they conceding 3.5 runs an over, really if the pace men didn't get reverse swing england would have been dead in this game.

Really not sure this justifies them to be favourites.

This win ranks high in this England team's career, as Bell said any win in the sub continent is hard to achieve and with BD playing so well this was an excellent result. Many questions hang over some players and the quality of the spinning attack remains a problem. Stokes (Roy of the Rovers) performance was splendid.

yeah was a good win, they now got a challenge to keep it 1-0 or win the series 2-0.

A very good, under pressure win from Bangladesh and probably Stokes' most mature and important match performance to date. That said, it is only Bangladesh regardless of how much they have improved we will need a much better performance in the second Test if we are to have a hope of beating India.

I can't help but feeling that England should be playing 4 pace bowlers and 2 spinners rather than 3 and 3. Our strength is our quick bowlers and we certainly don't need to be playing 3 average spinners simply because we are in the subcontinent. I'd play Batty as a holding bowler then either Rashid or Ali as an attacking bowler with Stokes, Woakes, Broad and Ball. The pace bowlers can have short 4 or 5 over spells with the two spinners taking turns at one end. I use turns to imply switching because lets face it, milk in a fridge turns more than any of these three.

I get your point about playing to strengths , MS. But surely Moeen has to play as a batsman anyway ? So then you are left with Batty (and Root) all turning the ball the same way...do you really see that as viable ?
I think either Rashid or Ansari has to play. If you want a fourth seamer you are going to have to jettison a batsman or dispense with your most reliable spinner in Batty.
Granted Ball couldn't make many less runs than Ballance , but still...

If the next pitch is similar I think England are stuck with this balance in the attack. At least for now.

Sorry, I just don't buy the argument that we need spinners who turn the ball both ways when none of the options can be trusted to bowl a string of decent overs in a row. Subcontinental batsmen play spin better than anyone and can anyone seriously suggest that the likes of Batty, Ansari or Rashid are a better option than Anderson when he comes back? To win a test you need to take 20 wickets and we're far more likely to do that with good pace bowling than with average spin bowling.

Batty for me is going to bowl a line to keep batsman honest with the like of Ali and Rashid who can attack a bit more. Ball, Broad, Stokes, Anderson and Woakes can bowl short spells of real threat. Let''s face it, we've got three spinners in the side because none of them can be trusted.

That's one way to look at it. The other point of view is that England have beaten Bangladesh, just, with the aid of some very dodgy umpiring.

Cook has said in his post match press conference that there'll be rotation of the squad for the 2nd test. Consensus on The Verdict was that Hameed and Ansari would replace Ballance and Rashid. I'd go with that.

I'd pick Ansari alongside Rashid, Batty, Mo..... In place of Woakes...Woakes has done nothing wrong, just dont think he is overly effective on these pitches, may as well go 4 spinners...as seamers arent overly important in Bangladesh...Stokes 2nd seamer, only on these turning pitches

How will you use your 4 spinners, 2 at each end. And if stokes or Broad get injured what then, both have a propensity to suffer injuries during games.

i know it's crazy and not something I'd normally suggest..but broad and woakes were hardly used, and Ansari offers something different as a left arm option....the pitches spin so much, you may as well load up your spin options..keeps the spinners fresh and rotating as well

Just because the pitches spin doesn't mean you pack your side full of average spinners and dump out the Test class pace bowlers you have. England's pace bowlers are far better than their spinners, we need to take wickets not just bowl overs.

Throughout this test I felt there were times when Cook should have been using his pace bowlers more than he did. Woakes in particular didn't get hold of the ball when it was reversing. It's one thing to continue with spin at both ends when they are a threat but a combination of pace and spin can be also effective and the three pace bowlers were significantly more economical.
